This year, we have remained focused on a clear ambition: creating the conditions for children, young people and communities to flourish. Every day, I see that purpose brought to life by our people. Whether in an early learning centre, youth centre, recreation facility, classroom or community program, our staff create environments where children and young people feel safe, valued, supported and empowered to flourish.
This year, I’ve continued to see the profound impact that early support and intervention can have on a child’s positive development . One of the year’s standout achievements has been the continued expansion of our School ReadY Language and Literacy Programme. What began as a Y WA initiative is now improving the lives and futures of children across Australia, with the program delivered in 23 Early Learning Centres nationally. Grounded in evidence-based practice with a focus on social-emotional learning, the program prioritises and language, literacy and school readiness, its growth reflects both the quality of our approach and the dedication of our educators. Most importantly, it demonstrates the lasting impact of investing in children’s earliest years.
With student attendance and retention continuing to decline nationally, too many young people in Years 7 to 9 are disengaging from education before they reach senior school. In response to this growing need, we expanded our proven Y School model with the opening of the Y School Junior Campus.
By supporting students in Years 7 to 9, we are intervening earlier and providing personalised pathways for young people who may not flourish in traditional school settings. Together, our junior and senior campuses demonstrate the impact of high quality teaching and learning, and we will continue to help students re-engage with their education.
Beyond education, thousands of young people engaged with Y WA programs through our youth centres, case management services, Youth Parliament and regional initiatives. Their stories continue to reinforce a simple truth: when young people have access to trusted adults, safe spaces and meaningful opportunities, they are better equipped to succeed and contribute to their communities.
From Play in the Park and the South Hedland Child and Parent Centre to our recreation centres in Serpentine Jarrahdale and Kalgoorlie, families told us they value opportunities to learn, play and belong. Members spoke of feeling welcomed, recognised and part of something bigger. These experiences remind us that strong communities are built through everyday moments of connection.
As we look ahead, we do so with confidence, ambition and a clear sense of purpose. On behalf of the Board and Executive Team, thank you to our staff, volunteers, partners and supporters for your dedication and commitment. Together, we are creating brighter futures and stronger communities across Western Australia.
