Frequently Asked Questions about becoming a Family Day Care educator with the Y WA

To become an approved educator in Western Australia, you will need: 

  • A completed Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care (you must have the qualification before you can be registered). 
  • A suitable home environment or venue that meets National Regulations. 
  • Successful interview and reference checks. 
  • Completion of the Y WA’s self-paced induction modules, which guide you through compliance requirements across the National Quality Standards.

No. Educators must hold a completed Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care before registration.

Your home must meet WA’s Family Day Care safety and environmental regulations. This includes: 

  • A fully enclosed and secure outdoor boundary 
  • Safety-glazed windows 
  • Access to essential facilities (kitchen, bathroom, laundry) 
  • Safe, compliant nursery equipment (cots, bedding, highchairs, etc.) 

A detailed Premises Risk Assessment is available from our service team. 

Most educators complete onboarding within 2 to 6 months, depending on: 

  • Time available for induction modules 
  • Local shire/council approvals 
  • Home modifications required 
  • Completion of safety checks and documentation 

Educators pay: 

  • An annual membership fee 
  • Weekly subscription costs for required software such as Storypark and Harmony Web 
  • An Educator Levy, calculated per child per hour of care 

Educators can care for: 

  • 7 children total at any time 
  • A maximum of 4 preschool-aged (Kindergarten and under) 
  • A maximum of 3 school-aged (Pre-Primary and above) 

Your own children count toward this ratio until age 13 unless another adult is supervising them.

No. Due to regulatory changes, new Family Day Care approvals cannot be issued for homes with pools, spas, or similar hazardous water features. 

Yes! Pets are welcome. Each pet is risk assessed annually to ensure safe interactions and hygiene standards.
