Frequently Asked Questions about the Y School

Answers to common questions from families and students.

Enroling at the Y School is a supported, step by step process. Enrolments can be made by the young person, their family, current school, external services, the Department of Education, or anyone supporting the young person.

Step 1: Download and complete the enrolment form.

Step 2: Return the completed form via email to enrolments@yschools.wa.edu.au

Step 3: Your young person will be placed on our waitlist while we review your details. We’ll be in touch if we need any further information, or when a place becomes available.

Not sure where to start? Complete our online enquiry form and a team member will get back to you in three business days.

We accept enrolments year-round using a one-out-one-in process, e.g. when a student leaves, another student can commence.

Absolutely! Young people and families are welcome to visit their specific Y School campus before enroling to get a feel for the space and meet the team.

Walkthroughs are:

  • Led by a Youth Worker
  • Around 15 minutes in duration (longer if needed)
  • Scheduled during quieter times when minimal students are on-site

To book a walkthrough, visit your campus page to find contact details and get in touch with the team directly.

We follow the Department of Education term times but also have our own school calendar, which includes staff development days and other key dates. The calendar is updated regularly, so it’s the best source for accurate information.

Term Dates

  • Term 1: Monday 2 February to Thursday 2 April
  • Term 2: Tuesday 21 April to Friday 3 July
  • Term 3: Tuesday 21 July to Friday 25 September
  • Term 4: Tuesday 13 October to Thursday 17 December

Public Holidays

  • Monday 2nd March – Labour Day

You can also contact our administration team for questions about term dates.

Class sizes vary depending on the campus:

  • Year 7 to 9: Classes run in hubs with up to 30 students per hub. Each hub has 5 dedicated staff members, including teachers, education assistants, and youth workers. Additional support staff are available to work with small groups or support students one-on-one when needed.
  • Year 10 to 12: Classes have 1 teacher for every 17 students. Each youth worker supports up to 20 students, and additional staff are available to provide support based on individual needs.

We offer a wide range of subjects and pathways tailored to each student’s goals. These include:

  • English and Maths (WA Curriculum, Direct Instruction, Foundation, General)
  • Humanities and Social Sciences in Action (HASSIA), Community Arts, Community Services, Work Skills and more
  • Science, Technology, English, Art and Maths (STEAM)
  • UniPrep (in partnership with Edith Cowan University)

Timetables are built around students, ensuring they access the best mix of subjects and enrichment opportunities for them.

  • We provide all classroom supplies, snacks, and lunch items
  • Voluntary financial contributions are welcome but not required
  • If your young person has specific preferences or dietary requirements, we encourage you to bring a packed lunch

We do not have a formal uniform, but we do ask the following:

  • No offensive slogans or images
  • No overly revealing clothing
  • Sensible footwear suitable for sport, cooking, and active learning
  • Clean clothes, and roll-on deodorant preferred (we request no use of aerosols, sprays or perfume for health reasons such as asthma and migraines)

No, students cannot leave during school hours without staff members receiving parent/carer permission.

If a student needs to leave early or will be absent, please contact the school so we can update attendance records.

All current roles are advertised on Seek, AISWA and the Y WA current vacancies page. Search the Y School to view our teaching, youth work, and support positions.
