A few years ago, Amani never imagined she would be speaking at a national conference, sharing her story with educators and leaders. Back then, school was a place where she felt invisible, unsupported, and defined only by grades and results.

Everything changed when Amani joined Y School.

“For the first time, I was seen. Not just as a set of grades, but as a person. They [the Y School teachers] gave me an environment where I could grow, not just academically, but as a person. They believed in me when I couldn’t believe in myself, and they showed me that my future was worth fighting for,” she said.

With the support of teachers and staff who never gave up on her, Amani rediscovered her love of learning and built confidence in herself. Step by step, from showing up to class, to finishing an assignment, to sharing her work, to speaking in front of others, she began to flourish.

“What helped me stay in school and keep going was the people around me who never gave up on me, even when I wanted to give up on myself. At the Y School, the teachers didn’t just care about my grades – they cared about me. They noticed when I was struggling, they listened, and they reminded me that I wasn’t alone.”

“Most of all, I stayed because for the first time I felt like I belonged somewhere. And when you feel like you belong, it’s easier to believe you have a future worth fighting for.”

Amani’s journey has not been easy. Like many students, she faced moments where continuing seemed impossible. But at Y School, she discovered strength, belonging, and a sense of purpose. Now, she dreams of becoming an occupational therapist so she can give others the same hope the Y School gave her.

Reflecting on her journey, Amani shared, “I can finally see a life ahead of me – a life where I have dreams, goals, and hope. And for the first time, I believe I deserve that life, and that I can create it for myself. I am not just surviving – I am now thriving.”

Amani’s story embodies Y School’s mission: creating environments where every young person feels seen, supported, and empowered to reach their full potential and ultimately flourish.
