A local Lakelands family day care service has been recognised among Australia’s best, with Ware Bears Family Day Care winning the Mandurah and Peel regional category in the 2026 Excellence in Family Day Care Awards.

Operated by husband-and-wife team Kelvin and Jess Ware and supported through the Y WA Family Day Care program, Ware Bears was recognised for its outstanding commitment to providing high-quality early learning and care in a warm, home-based environment.

The Excellence in Family Day Care Awards are Australia’s only awards program dedicated exclusively to family day care. This year, more than 4,200 nominations were received from families and communities across the country.

With more than 40 years of combined experience in the childcare sector, Kelvin and Jess established Ware Bears Family Day Care almost three years ago with a vision of creating a home away from home for children and families.

“Being nominated for the second year in a row is a huge achievement, so to actually win the regional award is an incredibly proud and special moment for us,” they said.

The pair have built a service centred on strong relationships, personalised learning and a sense of belonging. Children are encouraged to explore their interests through play-based learning, outdoor adventures and meaningful everyday experiences, with nearby Swan Lake and local bushland offering opportunities to connect with nature.

Their service supports younger children with early learning and care, while also providing before and after school care and vacation care for school-aged children.

Y WA Family Day Care provides ongoing support, mentoring, training and resources to educators across Western Australia, helping them deliver safe, flexible and nurturing learning environments tailored to the needs of local families.

The award recognises not only Kelvin and Jess’ dedication, but also the important role family day care services play in supporting children to build confidence, develop relationships and flourish within their communities.

“We are incredibly proud of what we have built and grateful to the families who trust us with their precious little ones,” Kelvin and Jess said.
