Liam arrived to us at The Y School in 2023 having had a history of negative experiences in other educational settings. From the outset of his time with us, Liam showed significant interest in completing his education so that he was able to enlist with the Australian Defence Force. This timing also coincided with the first Kokoda Trek program run by The Y WA, which provided Liam an opportunity to learn first-hand about the historical significance of the trail and Papa New Guinea in Australia’s own history.
During this time, Liam was commended for his leadership skills and desire to help others during the trek, taking a keen interest in administering medical assistance/first aid. His enthusiasm for the program was palpable, and he provided a great deal of testimony to the positive effects and outcomes that completing the trek had upon his life. This was the catalyst for him to commit whole-heartedly to his studies, driven by the desire to achieve his goals and create meaningful change towards his future trajectory.
As Liam began his journey beyond The Y School in 2024, he was accepted as a Cadet with the West Australian Police and enlisted with the Army Reserve. We were thrilled to hear that Liam’s journey in public service continued further, with his acceptance into the Australian Federal Police in 2025. His story of success at The Y School is deeply embedded within the school’s philosophy on building educational experiences that foster connection, competence, caring, character and confidence within young people in order for them to flourish on a personal and societal level.
