Our Serpentine Jarrahdale Community Recreation Centre is just $85 away from its $1,000 fundraising goal, thanks to the generosity of around 200 staff and members who have embraced Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Throughout October, the Serpentine Jarrahdale Community Recreation Centre (SJCRC) has brought its community together to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer through a range of activities, fundraising initiatives and a sea of pink.
Organised by Assistant Centre Manager Tracey Goodeve, the campaign has included a 2 km community walk, pink group fitness classes, pink cupcakes, keyrings and handmade lace coat hangers.
The community walk was a particular highlight, with 18 staff and members taking part to show their support. The campaign also has a personal connection for the centre, with several members having experienced breast cancer themselves or having family members affected by the disease.
Tracey said she had been overwhelmed by the response from the SJCRC community. “I’ve honestly been overwhelmed by the support from both our staff and members throughout this campaign,” she said.
“It’s been wonderful to see everyone come together, whether it was wearing pink, joining in our activities, donating or simply helping spread awareness.
“It really shows what a special community we have here at SJCRC, and I’m incredibly proud of everyone who has helped make this campaign such a success.”
Members have also played a special role in the fundraising effort, with Wendy Wrigley making and donating pink cupcakes and Colleen Rankin creating handmade pink lace coat hangers.
Colleen also wrote a poem titled Breast Cancer, encouraging the community to contribute to fundraising efforts that support cancer research and to show compassion for those affected by the disease.
Her poem reflects the spirit of the campaign, with the lines: “So that our scientists can deal with the ‘Beast’, They need our support from the money we raise. So let’s all dig deep and boost their income, What they do for us, is deserving of praise.”
With fundraising continuing until the end of October, SJCRC is encouraging its community to help push the campaign across the finish line and reach its $1,000 target.
The initiative highlights how small acts of generosity and community participation can make a difference in supporting an important cause.
